Cosying Down with Hygge

2 minute read

As a professional organiser, APDO member Sue Spencer has witnessed countless home transformations, but nothing quite as magical as the moment a client discovers hygge in their own space. Their shoulders drop, a deep sigh and they say, "Ah… this feels like me." That's when Sue knows she's created something special with her client, a home that looks and feels right for them. And there's no better time to create this feeling than during the festive season, taking inspiration from hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’), the Danish art of creating warmth and cosiness in your home.

Hygge isn't about perfection or keeping up with trends. It's about creating a home that wraps around you like your favourite jumper - warm and reassuring. And from an organiser's point of view, it starts with a declutter, as excess clutter gets in the way of cosiness. You can't fully relax when every surface is busy, so move things out that you no longer use, need or love.

Quick tip: Clear your coffee table. Keep a book you're reading, a candle you love, or a soft throw. Everything else can go.

Lighting is everything, especially during the darker winter months. Soft, layered lighting can make all the difference. Table lamps, floor lamps and plenty of candles signal that it's time to unwind. I love to use fairy lights and lanterns (they’re not just for Christmas) as they create a warm, festive glow that makes chilly December evenings feel cosy.

Quick tip: Add a fragranced candle to a corner you pass often. Small touches like this can make a big difference.

Texture is where hygge comes alive. Wool blankets, soft cushions, wooden bowls and mugs that feel good in your hands aren't just pretty, they add interest to your home. Store them where you'll actually reach for them every day. Don’t keep these things you love for "special occasions", hygge is the perfect reminder that everyday moments deserve celebration.

Quick tip: Keep a small basket of blankets nearby. It's an instant cosy upgrade for guests or yourself.

Create a nook for doing nothing – a favourite chair to enjoy your morning coffee or a reading spot with everything within arm's reach. These are spaces that encourage you to slow down and linger, which is great for your wellbeing.

Keep your cosy essentials organised. A basket for throws, a drawer for candles and matches, a cupboard for your favourite teas. When comfort is easy to reach, you’re more likely to make time to experience it, perfect for this time of year when being at home should feel like a retreat.

Hygge is permission to be yourself at home. Comfort over perfection and presence over productivity. My favourite part of organising homes isn't creating magazine-worthy rooms, it's creating spaces where people can kick off their shoes, light a candle, wrap themselves in softness, and simply be.

So, take a look around today. Can you carve out a little corner for cosiness? Add a blanket, a candle or a chair that calls your name. Even small touches can transform your space and state of mind into something warm, welcoming and wonderfully yours.

That's hygge. That's home. Perfect for the festive season.
